What is Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD)?
It is a broad term used to describe any activity that isn’t executed in a straight line vertically down. Even in a vertical well, the drilling machine may sometimes have to drift away to avoid a stuck pipe or a geological formation, and then return to its initial path. The sidetracking capabilities of the driller are critical here.
HDD is a way to get utilities from one point to another without destroying the obstacles that are between the points. It is a better option compared to traditional drilling which can’t connect utilities in certain places.
Differences Between Traditional Drilling and Directional Drilling
Trenching is the most common way of installing and connecting utilities. There are certain limitations when this method is used as it can only be used when there are no roadways, buildings or other obstructions on the ground above the utilities. Directional drilling can be used in applications where trenching is usually used and also to drill under sidewalks, rivers, roads and even houses if there is a need for it.
